Combining on-farm innovation tracking and participatory prototyping trials to develop legume-based cropping systems in West Africa

چکیده
In the cotton-production zone of Burkina Faso, poor soil fertility and limited access to appropriate fertilizers call for alternative approaches sustain productivity, such as introduction more legumes into agroecosystem. Legumes have nearly disappeared from local cropping systems under pressure cotton monocropping model. To develop new legume-based using a bottom-up approach, this study was based on farmers' agroecological innovations. first step, called on-farm innovation tracking, five innovative were identified characterized farms located in area through interviews with “innovative farmers” who had designed implemented these systems: (i) Sorghum legume (cowpea, soybean or peanut) intercropping rotation maize cotton; (ii) Soybean cash crop (iii) Red cowpea intra-annual succession biomass crop; (iv) Mucuna maize; (v) Pigeon pea maize. second systems” (ICSs) “participatory prototyping trials” (PPTs) two communities they evaluated during field days by farmers (“field-day farmers”) having no previous experience ICSs. By comparing evaluations made those field-day farmers, it shown that locally ICSs adapted drivers change are great interest other study's two-step participatory approach is an original relevant way co-design introduce

Xylem sap flux density (Fd) was measured, on a 43-year-old (mature) and three 4-year-old (young) mango (Mangifera indica L.) trees, using Granier-type probes. The relative influences of environmental variables were examined under well-watered condition. Circumferential variation in Fd was also investigated by placing sensors on the north, south-west and south-east sides of the mature tree. Sap ...
متن کاملAnalyzing Ranking and Rating Data from Participatory On- Farm Trials
Participatory methods have been widely adopted by researchers working on applied agricultural problems including crop breeding. This change in paradigm has implications for the design and analysis of methods used. Some of these are summarized in a companion paper by this author (see Coe 1, this proceedings). An assumption of this paper is that formal analysis of quantitative data collected syst...

متن کاملEnhancing economic water productivity under on farm reservoirs in diversified rainfed cropping systems
A long term study was done to assess the impact of on farm reservoirs (OFR) on oil seedand cereal based cropping systems with vegetables (okra, tomato and carrot) in semi-aridalfisol of southern Telangana region. Two supplemental irrigation (SI) depths (30 and 50 mm)from OFR with raingun system were studied for assessing the water productivity andprofitability of the technology in these croppin...
